Afterschool Helps to Close the Opportunity Gap

The achievement and opportunity gaps are a growing concern for educators, policy makers, and community members across the country. Research has shown that consistent participation in high-quality afterschool programs helps close the gaps between students from lower- and higher-income families —but many stakeholders aren’t yet familiar with the transformative effect afterschool can have.

Afterschool programs help close the growing achievement gap between kids from lower- and higher-income families, but 9.7 million lower-income kids are still waiting for a spot in a program—that’s more than double the 4.5 million who already participate in programs. We’ve got to make sure every child has access to these important learning opportunities!

The academic achievement gap between kids from lower- and higher-income families has grown noticeably in the last 30 years. It’s a concerning trend—but participation in high-quality afterschool programs can help reverse it.

Parents agree: Afterschool programs are helping their children succeed! From homework help to reading and writing to engaging with STEM subjects, afterschool programs give kids so many important learning opportunities (and help boost academics, attendance, AND behavior!).
