It was a big morning for afterschool policy! Congress agreed upon a bill titled the Every Student Succeeds Act, which would reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
The good news for the out-of-school time world is that the bill does allow for a dedicated 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funding stream. An area of concern, however, is that the appropriation level for 21st CCLC would actually be a decrease from what is currently appropriated. If this reauthorization is successful, the final funding appropriation level could still be adjusted.
Be sure to keep an eye out for further updates from the national Afterschool Alliance as the reauthorization process continues. You can read more on their blog as well. This is an especially important policy issue for 21st CCLC providers throughout Montana, as well as for the many families who rely on those programs to keep their kids safe and engaged after the school day.
